The history of costumes goes back a very long way. Ancient rituals featured them, and we know that theatre has been a part of our lives almost since written history began. During the Renaissance costumes were a big deal. Shakespeare used them extensively in many of his plays.

Modern theatre and movie productions still use a lot of costumes. Basically, anything that is worn in these circumstances can be considered a costume because it transforms the actor/actress into a different person for a little while. If a production has a lot of funding, they will generally have a costume designer, a makeup artist, and someone to direct all of this.

Costumes that the average person generally buys are usually not as nice or detailed as ones for big acting productions. These are made to be affordable and fun.

There are a ton of costumes that people can choose from nowadays. Many of them are Halloween costumes, but there are also party costumes for other times of the year as well. A black cape, could be a part of your magic supplies for instance.

Costumes from movies are some of the most popular on the market. Superhero costumes are particularly popular, especially as kids’ costumes. All the little boys, and some of the little girls, want to go trick or treating as their favorite hero. But characters like Superman and Spiderman are also popular with adults.

Another kind of costume that is really popular is pirate costumes. Ever since Pirates of the Caribbean came out, pirate costumes of all kinds have exploded in popularity. Pirate costumes and their accessories can be found at just about any costume shop.

If you have a baby or very small child in the family, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be dressed up just like everyone else. There is a wide selection of infant costumes that people can get for their little ones.

There is also a category of adult costumes that isn’t really meant for the average Halloween party. Sexy costumes are a very popular item for people who are looking for something suggestive and edgy. Sometimes costumes can be sexy without being revealing, and these are worn to many parties where kids are not expected to be present. They are also popular for wearing to Halloween parties at nightclubs. Other sexy costumes are not meant to be worn outside the home at all, and are just meant for romantic evenings in.

One great change that has occurred in the costume industry in the past few decades is that there is a large selection of plus sized costumes. Not everyone can fit into tiny costumes, but body shape is no reason for people to be left out of the fun. Any costume shop will have a plus sized costume section.

Pet costumes are another type of costume that has become very popular in the last few years. Every year more costumes come out, especially dog costumes. There are pet costumes for any occasion as well.

If you are having trouble thinking up some costume ideas for you or your kids, going to a costume shop could be just the ticket. If you want to avoid the crush of a costume shop when you aren’t even sure what you want, you can also flip through a costume catalog. These usually start coming out before Halloween, some can be found at craft stores.

We encourage you to pick costumes that you love, and go be someone you’ve always wanted to be for a little while. Of course, read all instructions on your costume before putting it on, and always practice caution when dressing up kids and animals.
